thetakehomepaycalculator.com is a free, independent UK salary calculator designed to give you a clear, instant answer to one of the most common questions in personal finance: how much of my salary do I actually keep?
Why We Built This
Most people don't know exactly how much Income Tax and National Insurance they pay — and their payslip doesn't make it easy to work out. We built this calculator to bridge that gap. Enter your gross salary, and in one step you'll see a payslip-style breakdown showing every deduction, from Income Tax and National Insurance to pension contributions and student loan repayments.
How We Ensure Accuracy
Every calculation uses the official Income Tax bands, National Insurance thresholds, and Personal Allowance published by HMRC for the current UK tax year. We update the calculator each April when new rates take effect, cross-referencing against HMRC's published rate tables at gov.uk/income-tax-rates and gov.uk/national-insurance.
Our Methodology
The calculator runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. No salary data is transmitted to any server or stored anywhere. The tax engine implements the same stepped-band arithmetic used by UK payroll systems: it applies each Income Tax rate to the relevant portion of taxable income (after Personal Allowance), calculates National Insurance on gross earnings above the Primary Threshold, and handles pension deductions, student loan repayments, and the £100k Personal Allowance taper.
Independence
thetakehomepaycalculator.com is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by HMRC, HM Government, the NHS, MoneySavingExpert, or any other organisation. We are an independent tool using publicly available tax data. Results are for guidance only and should not be treated as financial or tax advice.
